The Minister of Interior participates in the work of the Second Global Refugee Forum in Geneva

The Minister of the Interior, Mr. Saeed Nouh Hassan, participated in the Second World Refugee Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, at the head of a high-level delegation that included the Executive Secretary of the National Office for the Relief of Refugees and Victims, Mr. Hussein Hassan Darar, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Djibouti to Switzerland, Mrs. Khadra Ahmed Hassan.

The primary goal of this forum, which is held every four years, is to address the growing challenges related to the refugee crisis on a global scale, in addition to promoting the implementation of the goals of the Global Compact on Refugees, including supporting countries of origin to facilitate the return of refugees to them.

In this regard, the discussions held on the sidelines of this meeting highlighted the urgent need for collective action to meet the basic needs of refugees, including access to education, health, and sustainable economic opportunities.

The participants, leaders, humanitarian organizations, and civil society representatives, made urgent calls to strengthen international cooperation to ensure the protection of the rights of refugees and their harmonious integration into host societies. They also pledged to increase funding for refugee assistance programs and initiatives aimed at raising the level of cooperation between governments, international organizations, and the private sector.
For his part, the Minister of Interior delivered a speech at the opening session of the forum, in which he pointed out that this meeting constitutes an opportunity to evaluate the initial outcome of what has been accomplished on the ground with regard to fulfilling the commitments and pledges that were announced during the first forum in the year 2019, praising in this context the efforts. Efforts made by countries and other parties concerned with the implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly on December 17, 2017.

Speaking about Djibouti’s efforts to protect refugees, Mr. Saeed Nouh Hassan pointed out that Djibouti had announced during the forum that it had taken a number of concrete steps, such as integrating refugees into the national development plan within Djibouti’s Vision 2035, and providing quality health care to all refugees. In addition to integrating refugee youth into training courses, to enable them to engage in economic development.

He explained that our country has succeeded in fulfilling some of these commitments while it was unable to take other steps due to not obtaining the required support from international partners, expressing his conviction that the achievements it achieves in this regard will remain dependent on international cooperation and solidarity.
